Dance Dance Revolution Explained

Dance Dance Revolution, often called DDR, is an interactive rhythm-based video game. Players stand on a dance pad or dance mat that is used in place of a traditional video game controller. There are four directional arrows on the pad, one pointing to the front, one pointing to the right, one pointing to the back, and one pointing to the left. The dancer selects an arrow by stepping on it. The player's feet are also used to activate all other controls, such as the buttons to start and pause a game.

Game play begins by selecting a difficulty level and a song. As the song plays to accompanying visuals, much like a music video, a pattern of arrows appears on the screen. The player must step on these arrows on the dance pad, matching the rhythm of the song. Songs at the beginning levels include single arrows and steps that last a full beat. More difficult songs include steps requiring players to jump on two arrows at once, freezes requiring them to hold their foot on a arrow until the freeze disappears, and steps that fall at the half or quarter-beat of the music.

Multi-player options include turn-based play and head-to-head competition with two side-by-side dance pad controllers. The most ambitious dancers can choose a mode that uses arrows on both dance pads, doubling the playing space, and leaving them jumping from mat to mat.

DDR can be a great game to play with friends, as everyone enjoys competing, showing off when they're doing well, and laughing together when they stumble on a difficult song. Played alone, it's still a pleasant diversion and good exercise. Games include practice and exercise modes to track your progress and fitness, such as calories burned.
