Dance Step Diagrams
From LoveToKnow Dance
Dance step diagrams are very helpful to those who are visual learners, and vital to those who are attempting to learn any form of dance outside of a formal studio environment. Thanks to the Internet, there are plenty of diagrams available for free.
The Importance of Dance Step Diagrams
There are a lot of great reasons to use dance step diagrams. Namely, they can be very helpful for those who are self-taught in social dance, or those who would like a light review of any dance form. They are also beneficial to choreographers, who can use them as a visual guide or reminder to a group of dancers learning a routine with complex moves or formations. Whatever the reason, dance step diagrams can be very helpful in many artistic aspects.
If you will be using diagrams, make sure they are easy to read and of high quality. A thrown together scribble, or something so complex it cannot be deciphered, will not be helpful to anyone. If the diagram is off the Internet, or the work of someone else in any form, ensure you have permission before distributing. Copyright infringement can carry some hefty penalties, so do your homework before passing anything out to your dance troupe.
Types of Diagrams
A dance step diagram can be in many different forms. The most popular is a social dance diagram, which uses black and white footprints to map out basic partner dance steps. One example of this is found here, where the left and right feet are clearly labled, and the diagrams are concise and to the point. Sometimes these diagrams will sometimes involve a few colors to further reiterate what is being shown.
A secondary form of diagramming is the sketch or use of dance photographs to teach a specific step. This may involve an illustration or a human model to create an effective example. You will often find these in ballet books or websites where proper technique is being emphasized. These diagrams may also be in the form of video files, with the speed sped up or slowed down to emphasize what is being shown.
Finally, there are 3-D dance diagrams that can be created exclusively on a computer, using software programs such as DanceForms. While pricey, it is great for studios and provides a simple example for all dancers to follow.
Where to Find Diagrams
Some destinations on the Internet celebrate complex historical dance step diagrams, while others are available as a teaching tool. Whatever your motivation, punching in the name of your desired dance style into Google will often bring up many dance diagrams.
For example, type in "learn social dance online," and you’ll be directed to Dance TV, which teaches you the basics right in your home office, while offering a DVD kit for follow up lessons.
If you’re willing to pay a fee to learn social dance, a site like Salsa Boot Camp is a great place to start. If you’d rather learn a more classical form of dance, try Discover a Hobby’s ballet section, full of articles and diagrams.
You can also find dance diagrams in the various classic and social dance books found on the Internet. They also may be provided to you if you take a ballroom or square dance class at your community recreation center or local dance studio.
