Why Dance Step Graphics

Dance step graphics can come in a variety of forms, and be useful in different ways. First and foremost, dance step graphics often come in the old fashioned form of black and white footprints mapping out the various maneuvers of social dance. Feet will be labeled left and right, and often one foot will be white while the other is shaded in black to differentiate. These graphics have been used for years to help people (especially men!) learn social dancing quickly.

Dance step graphics have also been used for exercise. Take for example, the graphics found in video games such as Dance, Dance Revolution or instructional children’s DVDs such as Bella Dancerella. These graphics are used for both fitness and pleasure, with no real technical goals in mind. Countless people have caught the dancing bug through computer enhanced graphics that have met them right in their own living room.

Finally, dance step graphics can inspire. Seeing a computer generated image or a photographer’s portrait of a ballerina with beautiful extensions, or a group of modern dancers in a perfect and original formation can spur on new ideas in choreography and help those in the arts feel refreshed and renewed.

Where to Find Them

Dance step graphics are usually found via the Internet. Here you can find steps, sketches of routines, images of countless dancers and teams and videos of computer designed choreography. As mentioned above, dance step graphics can also be found via DVDs, video games or other home entertainment units that use dance as part of its theming. Perhaps it’s a dance-based workout video, or maybe you’re playing the latest Nintendo Wii game – whatever the avenue, chances are you’ve either witnessed or interacted with some sort of dance step graphic while in your living room.

Make Your Own

You can even create your own dance step graphics, which is particularly helpful if you are an instructor. One example of this is the software simply known as “Dance.” For a small fee, you can download a ballroom dance graphic database that contains over 150 files with dance patterns. You can also create your own and print them or export them to send to your students.

One of the most advanced dance step graphics program currently available for your computer is DanceForms, which was designed with the help of world-renowned modern dancer Merce Cunningham. With its software, you can map out routines with poseable dance figures, animate graphics of large groups, and save routines to reference to. Computer graphics have revolutionized the way choreographers compose their steps, and advances will continue to be made in the years to come.

Authorized Use of Dance Steps

Since dance step graphics are so readily available on the Internet in either sketch or animated form, it is important to keep copyright laws in mind when preparing something for your own group. Even using choreography for a small dance recital or private party can be considered stealing if rights are reserved. Many coaches and instructors glean steps off of YouTube, and if you are in the habit of doing so, it is always wise to comment on the video to ask permission. The uploader will appreciate your consideration, and chances are he/she won’t have issue with your request.

If you are printing out and displaying someone’s graphic art work or photograph, look for copyright laws before forging ahead. Creative Commons is a license-free photo share site that has uploaded sketches and photographs you can edit and use for free. If you are on a tight budget utilize this site and other freeshare destinations to keep yourself creative, yet within the law.
