Dance Team Competitions
From LoveToKnow Dance
Dance team competitions happen all across the country each year, ranging in level from beginner and exhibition to highly advanced and elite. Below is a list of some dance competitions throughout the season that schools and studios can enter, with a profile attached to each. In this article you will also find preparation tips and pointers to help you get started on your way to first place.
Champion Tours and Events
Champion Tours and Events is an organization that hosts workshops, training sessions, and competitions. They will organize opportunities for your dance team and get you on track for a great season. They are home to National dance/drill competitions in Orlando, New York City, Los Angeles, and West and Northwest Houston. Many of the competitions are designed for junior high and high school aged dance teams.
Contest of Champions Nationals
The Contest of Champions Nationals is an open competition, meaning it doesn’t require any specific association or camp affiliation to sign up. You simply need to be part of a studio or drill team.
Starmakers
Starmakers hosts a wide variety of camps and workshops, as well as occasional contests. You will find the registration form and further information on their official website.
Getting Ready For Dance Team Competitions
Since competition season really is, well, competitive, it’s important that every member of your dance team is in top shape both physically and mentally so they can handle the rigors of the season. First and foremost, get all dancers to live a healthy lifestyle. Every team member should be eating healthy and regularly, getting enough sleep at night, and living a well-rounded life. Those who make dance their entire life will become exhausted and overly disappointed if the team does not succeed at their competitions. Instead, focus on the positives such as team building, life experience, and getting the opportunity to dance that one more time.
Costuming is also important for the season. Your group should have a look or theme for the year, and costumes should reflect that. Pick out an outfit that is flattering to all the body types represented on your team, and don’t try to make something work that won’t, regardless of how well it looked on the dancers in the catalog. There are a lot of places to find dance team competition costumes, including Just For Kix and Algy Performance Collection. With the majority of dance competition catalogs, you will need to show proof of the studio or school you are an instructor for in order to gain access to images and price charts. Most of these companies do not sell to the general public.
A regular rehearsal schedule is also essential for becoming a stellar dance team. Practice really does make perfect, and if you don’t get enough rehearsal time in, then you will fall short next to other teams who were sure to run their drills continuously before arriving. Make contracts at the beginning of the season that each dancer must sign to commit to the competition schedule. If a dancer misses too many practices or cannot make it to a competition, then they should be removed from the group until they are able to make a firmer commitment. This ensures that those who give 100% will have the best possible shot at winning, rather than having a team mixture of dedication and half-hearted attitudes.
Finally, don’t be afraid to let the best girls shine. Sometimes exceptionally compassionate choreographers want to give everyone the chance to shine. However, practice spotlight sharing during exhibitions, not competitions. Competitive teams that succeed showcase their most flexible and technically advanced dancers.
Dance competitions are fun and exciting, something to look forward to during the high school and college years. Work hard to get your team ready for a great year!
