If you're new to the exciting world of line dancing, you might be a little intimidated by seeing the seasoned pros and veteran fans mixing it up on the dance floor. Even when you find places where they offer lessons before the "real dancing" begins, they often charge for the lessons and there's no guarantee that the instructor will go at your pace, or even teach you a dance to a song you like.
While there are definite social benefits to taking lessons with a group, and certainly a lot of fun to be had dancing with others, you can give yourself a head start by going online and using some of the steps and videos there. Here are some of the advantages of using the web to start moving your feet.
- Choose what you want to do. If the whole reason you want to line dance is because you like Carrie Underwood's "Cowboy Casanova", you can give yourself the instant gratification of going to YouTube and finding many videos showing the dance.
- Go at your own speed. In almost any dance, there are steps that come more easily and some that are more difficult. By taking online dance lessons at home, you have the chance to play things over again, working on just the sections you want to, and repeating them as often as necessary. There are even some plugins for web browsers that will let you play the videos in slow motion so that you can really concentrate on what's happening.
- Use cheat sheets. While they're actually called "Step Sheets" the line dance instructions are often printed out, step by step. Holding one of these sheets is usually discouraged when actually taking lessons (and certainly when actually dancing) but if you're using the web for a teacher, who's to know that you printed out the directions?
- Dance when you want to. If the only time you can find for dancing is six a.m. before the kids get up, the online dance teachers are right there with you. If you want to spend an entire Saturday learning the Boot-Scootin' Boogie, the people dancing on YouTube are definitely not going to get tired before you will.
There are really only two drawbacks to online dance lessons. One is that the online teachers can't see you, and can't give you immediate feedback regarding your form or mistakes you might be making. The second, of course, is the fun of making new line dancing friends. But that can always come later!
Where to Find Free Online Line Dancing Lessons
It's actually too easy to find line dance lessons on the web, but almost all of them cost money, eventually. There are so many available that narrowing down the best ones can be difficult. For example, LearnToDance includes free online line dancing lessons among their many offerings - but only for two songs. The lessons can be useful for beginning, but they certainly don't give you a variety.
You can find a lot of dances taught on YouTube - usually on two different levels. There are completely free lessons from people like "PhoenixFire110", who starts with "Copperhead Road" and goes on to teach several of the most popular line dances from her living room. On the other end of the spectrum are professionally-produced videos such as "Line Dancing for Beginners." However, most of the professional YouTube videos are only segments and you have to buy the DVD to get the complete lesson. For every dance you find, though, there are usually a dozen related videos available that will also show you how to move, and absolutely for free!
While you may have to take some time piecing together the step sheets and videos to create your own line dance lessons from the Internet, by the time you set foot on the dance floor, you'll be more than ready to shake your boots, tip your hat, and get your country groove on!
