The Positive Aspects of Large Dance Studios

The bigger the dance studio, the better chance you have of receiving a diverse selection of dance and fitness classes. While smaller studios will simply offer ballet, tap and jazz – or perhaps only social dance styles – larger studios usually offer classes in all of these dance forms as well as lesser known styles such as liturgical dance, Irish step dance, and trendy fitness workouts such as Zumba.

In addition to a broad selection, you also will be able to sometimes take advantage of the notoriety that comes with a large, and well-established, dance studio. These locales often host master classes with prestigious guest instructors from all across the nation and sometimes abroad. You’ll have the privilege of learning from a diverse variety of teachers that will allow you to develop a broader sense of style and technique than you could ever hope to find in a small local studio.

Finally, training at a well-known, large-scale studio will possibly open more doors for you if your hopes lie in a career in dance. Job applications get a boost when they show you’ve studied under the instructors at such notable institutions as the American Ballet Theater or the Alvin Ailey School. Having such names on your resumé proves that you've received a high-caliber level of instruction. Local studios are often unknown to major dance companies and nationwide theatrical organizations.

The Downfalls

While it is great to study at a major dance studio if you are given the opportunity, there are also some disadvantages to dancing at such a large location. First and foremost, you will not always receive the individual attention you expect for your money. Many large studios pride themselves on keeping classes small, intimate and able to meet each student’s individual needs. However, many still max out their classes and you may feel as if you are herded through your instruction rather than getting to know your teacher and classmates personally.

Large-scale studios also tend to charge more in certain instances. Sometimes you will find yourself paying for the prestige of the dance academy, while the instruction may not be better quality than smaller locations. Paying for the name is common, and it may not be as good a deal for the student as it is for the owners.

Lastly, large studios may have an intensely competitive feel that intimidates many dancers. If you are taking a dance class just for the pure joy of dance, you may not want to be thrown into a class filled with those who have prima ballerina aspirations. Elitist attitudes are unfortunately issues at all dance studios; however, the size and level of prestige of the studio you attend may crank that up a notch or two.

What’s Right for You?

If you are unsure whether or not you should look into large studios for your dance training, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is my goal from taking a dance class?
  • Do I value individual attention and an instructor that knows my name?
  • Do I want to attend a studio with a recognizable name and set reputation within the dance world?
  • How much am I willing to spend on my dance classes?
  • Am I easily intimidated or do I thrive in a competitive environment?

If your goals are to get some exercise, learn how to dance, and thrive in a small community atmosphere, chances are you will prefer the homey and welcoming feel of a small studio. However, if you are looking to pursue a career or push yourself to the limits, then larger dance studios should remain on your list.
