From LoveToKnow Dance

Lots of people want to learn Beyonce "Single Ladies" dance steps; more accurately, "Put a Ring on It," but "Single Ladies" seems to have stuck. The dance itself is vibrant, passionate, fierce, and beautifully shot in the video. Learning it, though, doesn't have to be nearly as complicated.

Dance Training Needed? Not Much

While the dancers in the video, including Beyonce, have professional training in many disciplines from ballet and jazz to hip hop and other urban dance moves, you don't necessarily have to have that kind of training to learn the dance. In fact, you don't actually need any training at all since the video is readily available on the internet and shown on TV, you can simply play it over and over again until you learn the moves.

That being said, the movement vocabulary they use really comes from the world of jazz dance and hip hop. In fact, until the second repeat of the chorus If you like it then you shoulda put a ring on it almost all of the movement vocabulary is reminiscent of the isolations, footwork and costumes of jazz dance. After that the moves head much more towards the world of hip hop, with many hip thrusts, contractions, shimmies, and the like. Taking classes from professional teachers in these disciplines will certainly help you to learn Beyonce Single Ladies dance step sequences.

Costumes Needed? Not Much

One of the advantages to learning this dance is that the outfits worn by Beyonce and her two backup dancers is basically the same leotard that is often worn by dancers anyway – with a few changes, such as an off-the-shoulder look for the lead. These are accessorized by a metal glove and extravagant hairstyles, but the really difficult part to replicate is the stiletto heels the women wear. While the moves are standard jazz and hip hop, the shoes are definitely not standard – in fact, for most non-professional dancers, they would be dangerous. It may be best to work with reliable and stylish character shoes when trying to replicate the dance instead of messing around with dangerously high stilettos.

Resources to Learn Beyonce Single Ladies Dance Routine

Learning the dance can be done without either just trying to learn it by imitation, or going all the way into taking jazz and hip hop classes. Thanks to millions of fans and the Internet, there are many resources online, such as half-speed videos to try it out. You can also learn either the basic outline of the dance (good enough for club dancing or the like) or even a step-by-step move-by-move tutorial showing each segment of the dance.

Others Who Have Learned and Shared

One reason to learn the moves to the dance is because it has become a bit of a pop culture phenomenon – aside from many fans trying to simply emulate the star, Justin Timberlake and the cast of Saturday Night Live did a spoof of the dance which was both hilarious and also showed off the singer's dance training. Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers also donned a black leotard and tried to dance along.

Beyonce herself encouraged her fans to recreate the video as closely as possible in a contest on her site, offering a prize of $2500 to the best video. Whatever your reasons for learning it, remember to have as much fun as she did, and smile at the end with the accomplishment.
