Why Would You Learn Dance Moves?

People have been dancing for as long as there have been people. Plain and simple, it is something that every culture, society, and framework has done – even those that claim not to dance teach people how to control their bodies – and that's what dancing is, the deliberate control of your body movement.

Of course, contemporary culture tends to analyze and valuate things in order to make sure people know why a particular activity is good for them. Here are some of the benefits of dancing discovered over the years.

Exercise

There are thousands of DVDs and classes that combine various forms of dance with exercise – and dancers have always been held up as being the epitome of human health. While you may not get a ballet body from doing the Texas Two-Step, any health plan that benefits from walking can also benefit from some kind of dance.

Social Involvement

Almost all dancing is a social experience – whether it's dancing with your significant other after an intimate dinner or going out to a Country Western bar and joining the line-dance lessons there. There is a lot of enjoyment when you learn dance moves in the company of others, especially as you can help each other with difficulties and share in the triumphs.

Mating Ritual

Aside from the friendly social interaction, the fact is that dance has always been a way nature has used for animals to attract the attention of potential mates – and humans are no exception. Formal balls, pagan maypoles, Saturday Night Fever disco dance moves, and movie after movie has dance as the center of the attraction between two people who are looking for love. Some forms of dance like the tango display this very overtly, and it is also certalnly possible for people to dance with each other without romance being involved. However, it remains an effective tool of seduction.

Meditative Source

On the other end of the spectrum is the fact that dance (along with other physical activities) engages a different part of the brain than intellectual exercises like writing or dealing with the day-to-day stresses. At the same time it changes your body chemistry through the release of serotonin, endorphins, and other positive-feeling elements. All of this can help refresh and "reboot" your brain. Many people find that dance helps them let go of the stresses and then come back to deal with problems in a more positive light. From ancient forms like T'ai Chi to contemporary contact improv, letting your mind relax into the dance is a great tool for self-improvement.

Where to Learn to Dance?

Because dance has always been a part of culture, there are many ways to learn to dance. Thanks to the Internet and digital media, it's easier than ever. Here are some places to look for dance instruction:

  • Online – Pick out any dance form, type it into YouTube, and you will find many examples of people dancing it, teaching it, or just talking about it. Keep in mind that anyone can post a video; what they see and teach may not be all that accurate.
  • DVDs – While they aren't the most effective way to learn, DVDs have the advantage of being able to rewind, freeze, and repeat ad infinitum any moves you aren't sure of. Be sure to look for good customer reviews before you buy a DVD.
  • Personal Instruction By far the most effective way to learn dance moves is from a dance teacher – which could be your friend at the club teaching you the latest hip-hop dance moves, or could be a ballet soloist with her own studio.

Whatever way you learn, make sure you pick a form of dance you'll enjoy. The point is not just to move – the point is to dance, which is moving and loving it.
