Michael Jackson Dance Moves
From LoveToKnow Dance
Michael Jackson dance moves were at the height of their popularity during the 80s, but today they are still recognized as a legendary part of the dance and music scene. Read on to learn more about these classic moves and how they changed American culture.
Michael Jackson – Leader of the Pack
Michael Jackson met success at a young age, and skyrocketed to success in the 1980s. While he has long been recognized as a talented musician, this era in his career also gave his dancing abilities a chance to shine. Most popular for the Moonwalk, Jackson also trademarked a few other steps that have been immortalized in the dance world.
The Moonwalk
While Michael Jackson did not coin the original Moonwalk, he definitely personalized it to the point that his name is the first thing that comes to mind when people think about this dance step. What makes the Moonwalk exceptionally impressive is the fact it is an illusionary dance. It takes a lot of time to master, and only a few have succeeded at it.
To dance the Moonwalk, start with socks or shoes with a soft sole. Stand with both feet on the floor, close together with the left foot a bit ahead of the right. Next, raise up the heel of the right foot so that it looks as if you are about to take a step. Try your best to keep your left foot as still as possible.
While you lower the heel of your right foot, lean all of your weight on the right foot and drag back your left foot so your toes are lined up with the heel of your right foot. Now, lifting your left heel slightly off the ground, drag back.
With enough practice, you should be able to pull off a pretty impressive Moonwalk. Don’t expect to ever match Jackson’s expertise, but getting good at the dance is possible!
Circle Slide
The circle slide is best executed in a pair of sneakers, with the feet placed firmly and closely together. Put one foot in front of the other, and then spring into a heel pivot. Once you master pivoting on your heels, alternate it with a toe pivot. When you master the combination of these two turns, you will be able to achieve the quick and showy spin that Jackson was known for in his music videos.
The slide comes in only after you can pull off the turns, and when you learn how to combine the three, you can amaze your friends at that next dance night out. For a great visual instruction of the circle slide, visit Video Jug, which provides step by step instruction of this classic dance move.
Getting the Look
Outside of these two steps, Michael Jackson dance moves are known for their sharp execution. Jackson exudes self-confidence in all his movements, adding signature jolts and locks that can only be mastered after years of rehearsal and dance instruction.
Style is also key when it comes to the moves, and Jackson was all about his own look with his one handed glove and clashing socks and pants. If he chose to be as mainstream today as he was 20 years ago, he would undoubtedly be spurring a whole new line of fashion trends along with new dance steps.
Dancing Michael Jackson moves are an ambitious feat for any dancer. To get some training toward this goal, check out a local hip hop or street funk class in your city or town. You can also watch more videos of Jackson’s past work, or read up on the history of 80s dance.
