A Bright Future For Professional Ballroom Dancers

While ballerinas usually enjoy a limited amount of time in the spotlight, and hip hop dancers are at their best when they are young - professional ballroom dancers enjoy a longevity not normally found in other dance careers. This is due partly to the fact that the muscles used in ballroom dancing vary greatly than that of other forms of dance, significantly reducing the amount of strain placed upon the body during rehearsals and competition. Furthermore, ballroom dancers almost always work with a partner, meaning they can easily adapt their routines and create their own stunning choreography, rather than depending upon death defying leaps and spins often found in the world of elite jazz, ballet, and modern dance.

With a stronger assurance for a long career, what exactly do professional ballroom dancers do? Once they embark upon their chosen path, how do they journey toward that great achievement? Read on to discover the steps of a professional ballroom dancer, as well as some of the career options available to them.

The Beginnings of Ballroom Dance Training

Almost all professional ballroom dancers start their training at an early age. Children usually show a strong sense of rhythm while they are still quite young, which often determines whether or not they get involved in a pastime such as dance. Even more adorably, some children begin their ballroom dance training with a sibling, making it a family affair.

Some recreation centers offer partner dance classes, however the best place to develop skill and technique is in a dance studio specifically geared toward competitive ballroom dance. Dancers pay either by the class or for a group of lessons, and can either participate in a public class or invest in private lessons. Once a dancer is ready to compete, the frequency of rehearsals increases, and a private coach is often utilized. Dancers often then proceed to win awards, scholarships and other prizes in competitions both locally and internationally.

After the Spotlight

But what happens after a dancer is through with their amateur years? It is easy to burn out on the daily grind of competing and performing, and many of those who still hold on to a passion for ballroom will begin to explore other options.

Teaching is one way that amateurs make the easy transition into professional ballroom dancers. Whether it is opening their own studio or working for an already established one, many dancers find that teaching future generations of dancers is a very rewarding endeavor. Teaching children is especially popular, while others will go on to teach at the elite level, coaching future stars of the industry.

Teaching has also taken on another unique form in recent years, thanks to the overnight success of a TV show called Dancing With The Stars. This program gives professional ballroom dancers the opportunity to pair up with celebrities and teach them partner dancing from the ground up.

While viewers are shown what a daunting and frustrating process it can be, it is a great resume boost for any dancer, and also gives that individual the chance to perform once again, as all coaches dance with their celebrity partners onscreen.

Julianne Hough is one of the most famous ballroom dancers to come out of Dancing With The Stars. Her career has reached new heights ever since she and her partner, Helio Castroneves, stole the spotlight in a recent season of the program. Now professional ballroom dancers are chomping at the bit to participate in this prime time dancing phenomenon.

Other Dance Careers

Many competitive ballroom dancers also go on to a fine career in performing, be it in local venues or as part of a traveling show. Others set out to become costume designers or participate in other behind the scenes roles necessary for a successful show.

Whatever their chosen path, professional ballroom dancers enjoy a rich and musical life, full of not only dance, but wonderful experiences and memories that are cherished for a lifetime.
