From LoveToKnow Dance

Samba Types
There are several different types of samba dance. In the history of samba, there are several different musical styles from which samba evolved. Some samba dances are danced with a partner, and others are solo styles (such as the samba dancing that one sees in Carnevale events, such as the parade in Rio de Janeiro. Both types of samba dancing are fun to watch and to dance.
Partnered Samba Dance Moves
A great way to learn new samba steps is through online videos demonstrating samba moves. In addition, you can purchase an instructional DVD; however, sometimes there are resources free online that are every bit as good as a DVD. For example, the short Dance Vision Samba Instruction Basics video is aptly named 'Anyone can dance samba'. If you're sick of instructional videos that fly through the steps and leave you light years behind, this is one video that you will appreciate. Not only is each step demonstrated with the couple dancing so that you know what the step will eventually look like, but you also get to see the steps broken down and slowed down. The male instructor shows the steps the lead should take, and then the female instructor does the same for the following partner. They slow the steps down and repeat them multiple times, after which you probably will have mastered the basics shown in this video.
If you already know the basic samba steps and feel at home on the dance floor, you may be looking to learn some new moves to make your time on the dance floor much more interesting, as well as keeping your partner wondering what your next move will be. The next video features award-winning ballroom Latin dancers demonstrating new and exciting samba dance moves to add to your repertoire. Some of the information in this video is very basic samba instruction, but you will also learn a host of new steps to try out the next time you hit the dance floor. Once you've mastered what's in this video, try out part two, and then check out the remaining sequences on YouTube if you continue to enjoy these teachers, their teaching style, and the moves they choose to teach.
Solo Samba Dancing
Dancing the samba yourself, without a partner, can be lots of fun too. Especially for dance groups or for public performances, the samba is a lot of fun for audiences. Any time an audience greatly enjoys a dance routine, the dancers are bound to have more fun and to feel like they really impressed the crowd.
The Sambabody instructional video is a great option for learning a solo samba dance that you can use to impress on the dance floor or onstage. Learn step-by-step, and also get an idea of some of the costumes that can be worn for the samba without going overboard into the realm of Carnevale wear.
The Basic Samba video is divided into a series of segments, and all of them together will provide you with a ton of samba steps and good styling to go with the steps.
Lastly, this Samba Demonstration is a great video for seeing many of the samba steps you've learned in action. Demonstrations can help you improve your style and learn a few new moves while you're at it.
As with learning all dance, a dance class with a teacher is always a great way to learn a dance's basics or learn new steps to expand your repertoire. If you have the opportunity, a class is highly recommended. Not only will you learn new steps, but you'll also meet fellow dancers with whom you can have fun and compare notes.
